Srijan Centre For Community Welfare

Srijan - Dedicated to Education, Health and Total Care of Slum Children and Welfare of the Community

Srijan, a welfare project of community welfare Committee, Women's College, Calcutta started its journey on 9th July' 2003. It was registered under Societies Registration act in April 2005. Initially Srijan’ s activities were confined to a non formal weekend school for neighboring slum children along with health and hygiene awareness programme and health check up camps from time to time for the said children and their mothers. But in course of time Srijan extended its area of operation by expanding the target group and also by adopting various promotional programmes. Presently Srijan’s beneficial programmes cover 35 slum children and their mothers. This year Srijan inducted some more children and their mothers under its welfare activities. Last year Srijan adopted some beneficial schemes for the students of Women's College, Calcutta in collaboration with a local pathological laboratory. Srijan organized a blood group detection camp along with heath check up programme for the students of Srijan as well as the students of Women's College, Calcutta. After successful completion of the above programme, 'Health Cards' with the information regarding general health and blood groups were issued to everybody covered under the scheme. Health Cards were distributed on Annual celebration day of Srijan by Hon'ble Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Sri. Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya. One of the major tasks of Srijan is to promote health and education of the slum children and develop health and hygiene-awareness of their mothers through need-based schemes. Keeping in mind the said objective, Srijan arranges meeting with the mothers of the target group children. Frequent interaction with them enables us to cater to their needs of primary importance. Like every year, last year Srijan organized cultural competition on painting, singing, dance and recitation. With high enthusiasm it organized annual Excursion for its students. Srijan's students participated in the annual sports organized by the Sports Committee, Women's College, Calcutta. Srijan’s Annual Day was celebrated where small children of Srijan successfully presented 'Rituranga'. An exhibition on handicraft objects crafted by the students of Srijan added colour to the Annual day programme. Behind this appreciable performance of the students of Srijan lies the praiseworthy and relentless dedication of the teachers of Srijan who are also ex-students of Women's College, Calcutta. Srijan also organized a Thalasaemia Awareness workshop for the students of Women's College, Calcutta and subsequently a Thalasaemia Detection Camp for them. Serum Analysis Centre has assured us of technical support in this matter. Srijan's future also conducts Hepatitis 'B' Vaccination Camps for its students.

In order to inculcate financial independence in the womenfolk of the neighboring slum areas, Srijan is planning to initiate a “Micro Credit System”, similar to the programme in Bangladesh spearheaded by Nobel Laureate Dr. Mohd.
